Alternative Communication

The project explores the alternatives to written and spoken language. Many different groups of people and cultures use alternatives to spoken and written language as a means of communication; whether it’s because spoken language is not applicable such as in the Deaf community or because it doesn’t communicate quickly or clearly enough such as in signal flags. By experiencing the cultures and environments that use these applications the project aims to understand who uses these forms of communication and the varying ways in which they have developed. The outcomes are largely based on a documentation of the experience, and act as educational and functional visual guides.
