My proposal is about the freedom of speech on the Internet, a.k.a. Internet Freedom. With the rise and ease of access to the internet, the opportunities to express individually have grown exponentially, as well as the challenges of it. As example, the rise of Arab Spring in the Middle East to the global occupy movement, freedom of speech on the Internet has had a profound impact on human rights, political, social and economic reforms which will shape our future.
Fearing the power of the new technology / tool, some government has devised subtle and not-so-subtle ways to filter, monitor, and otherwise obstruct or manipulate the openness of the internet. An increasing number of governments make use of the Internet to spy on journalists and citizens, to prosecute and jail bloggers, and to censor online information.
In addition to the Internet’s trans-border feature, there are so many factors shaping the level of free speech on internet, and there exist various policies approach which has implication on freedom of speech.
The real challenge is how to fully exploit the potential of new media while not compromising civil liberties, including the rights to freedom of speech, education and also privacy.
